About Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia is a uniquely diverse country with a multi-cultural population. From the rich rainforests in Sarawak and mountainous peaks of Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, down to the cosmopolitan hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has something for everyone.

Kuala Lumpur is the official capital and largest city of Malaysia. Putrajaya is the federal administrative capital. Kuala Lumpur is also the main commercial and financial centre of the country. Fondly referred to as 'KL', the city has a population of almost two million and has grown to become one of the region's most prosperous capitals.

GENERAL INFORMATION
PASSPORT VISA REQUIREMENTS	All non-citizens require a valid passport to enter Malaysia with a validity period of six months beyond the length of their stay. Citizens of Commonwealth and European countries will be granted a visa upon entry. Delegates should contact their local Malaysian consulate to confirm visa requirements.
CUSTOMS AND EXCISE	International airports in Malaysia are staffed by customs officers and standard checks on baggage are made on all international arrivals. Drug-trafficking is illegal-mandatory death sentence.
WEATHER	Located near the equator, enjoys sub-tropical conditions throughout the year with temperatures hovering around 32 degrees Celcius (90-degrees Fahrenheit). Scattered rain showers will offer a welcome respite from the humidity.
LOCAL TIME	Malaysia is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 16 hours ahead of the US Pacifc Standard Time.
OFFICIAL LANGUAGE	Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) is the national language of the country. English is widely spoken and is used in business. Other languages and dialects used are Cantonese, Mandarin and Tamil.
RELIGION	Islam is the official religion of the country, but Malaysia enjoys freedom of worship and it is not uncommon to see mosques, temples and churches sharing a common neighbourhood. Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Christianity are among other religions practised in Malaysia.
FOREIGN EXCHANGE CURRENCY	The unit of currency is the Ringgit Malaysia (RM) which is divided into 100 sen. Currency notes are issued in denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM50 and RM100. Most shopping centres have licensed money changers. The current exhange rate for the Ringgit Malaysia to the USD is RM: 3.2 to US $1
BUSINESS HOURS	Shops are generally open between the hours of 10.00 am - 10.00 pm. Banking hours are between the hours of 9.30 am - 4.00 pm. Government offices and banks are closed on weekends.
TAX & TIPPING	Tipping is usually not customary in Malaysia. A 5% Government Service Tax and 10% Service Charge are added to rooms, meals and other related services. Sales Tax (VAT) is included in prices quoted. However, sales tax is applicable at hotels and most eateries and entertainment outlets.
CREDIT CARDS	Major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shops and restaurants. Travellers cheques and foreign currency can be changed at hotels or at a bank. Cash may also be withdrawn with these cards from selected local ATMs.
HEALTH REGULATIONS	No immunity shots of vaccinations are required for visitors entering Malaysia. Yellow fever vaccinations are required for arrivals from infected areas and from yellow-fever endemic zones except for children under 1 year of age.
TRAVEL INSURANCE	Travel insurance is recommended as there are no reciprocal international health agreement. As in many countries, medical services must be borne by the visitor.
TAXIS AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION	Taxis are inexpensive and required to use meters when ferrying passengers. Public transportation is very convenient and cheap.
WATER	Tap water is generally quite safe to drink. Bottled mineral or distilled water is served in hotels and most restaurants.
ELECTRICAL CURRENT	Type G (British 3-pin) sockets with 220-240 volts AC at 50 cycles per second are used.
METRIC MEASURES	Malaysia uses the metric system of weights and measures. Cloth is sold by the meter / meat by the kilo / petrol by the litre, while milestones are marked in kilometres.
